China would still be the country with the fastest growth in global packaging demand in the next 5 years, according to Smithers' latest research. "The Future of Global Packaging by 2026", the global packaging market will return to a stable compound annual growth rate of 3.9% from 2021 to 2026. At constant prices, this will generate a total market value of US$1.22 trillion in 2026.

China is still the world's largest market and will become the fastest-growing country by 2026, further consolidating its dominant position. At the same time, the rapid recovery of China's economy and consumption in the post-epidemic era will make Asia a major contributor to world economic growth.

Globally, the sales of cardboard packaging, corrugated cardboard, folding cartons and liquid packaging are expected to grow at the fastest rate in the next five years. In 2020 packaging end-use applications, industry/transportation accounted for 41.6%, food accounted for 29.6%, and beverage accounted for 13.9%.

In the industrial sector, due to the durability and repeatability of plastic drums and steel drums, the sales of intermediate bulk containers (IBC) are expected to grow at the fastest rate. 

However, with the globally increasing demand for Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality in recent years, the demand for environmentally friendly packaging materials has increased.
