Re-defining Wine Logistics with Flexitanks

Publish Time: 2024-01-09     Origin: Site

Embarking on a journey from the vineyards to your glass, the world of wine presents two distinct paths: bottled and bulk. Bottled wines, often referred to as "bottled in the country of origin," complete their entire winemaking process within the borders of their homeland. On the other hand, bulk wines, also known as "bulk-imported," involve importing the wine liquid from the country of origin, but the bottling process takes place in importing country.

Wine transportation has a history spanning 8 centuries, yet the industry continually explore new methods to reduce the shipping costs of wine, aims to make the unit price of wine more accessible, meeting the growing demand for high-quality wine. One innovative approach involves the use of flexitanks to transport bulk wine.

Why Bulk, Why Flexitanks?

Environmental Sustainability and Cost Efficiency:

Bottled wines are weightier due to the glass packaging, with the bottle accounting for about 40% of the total weight of a standard 750ml bottle of wine. To address this and reduce carbon footprint, the industry turn to bulk wine transport as an eco-friendly alternative. According to estimates, shipping bulk wine can save around $2.25 per equivalent quantity compared to bottled wine, additionally, the tariffs on bulk wine are lower than those on bottled wine.

Enhanced Capacity:

Flexitanks optimize container space, allowing for the transportation of significantly larger quantities of wine compared to traditional bottled shipments. In a 20-foot container, while bottled wine can accommodate 9,000 liters, Flexitanks increase this capacity to an impressive 24,000 liters. This not only translates to cost savings but also offers a substantial logistics advantage.

Oxygen Barrier Performance:

One of the critical features of Flexitanks is their superior oxygen barrier performance. Equipped with high-quality EVOH or aluminum-plastic films, LAF Flexitanks ensure an OTR (oxygen transmission rate) of <0.4cm3/ (m2*24h*0.1MPa), crucial for preventing oxidation and preserving the quality of red wine.

Preservation of Quality:

To guarantee the hygienic transport, LAF Flexitanks refrain from using any paper components. Instead, LAF feature HDPE liners and robust PP baffles to ensure the wine's quality remains unaffected by microorganisms or molds. And the flexible and robust flexitank protects wine quality during transit, mitigating potential damage caused by external factors such as temperature and humidity. Ensures that the essence and flavor of the wine reach their destination unscathed.

Anti-residual Valve:

LAF Flexitanks are equipped with anti-residual valve to prevent the film from being sucked in and clogging the valve during unloading. This ensures clean and efficient unloading without significant wine loss.

As we transition from the bottled wines to the innovation of bulk wine transport using Flexitanks, the focus on red wine intensifies. Flexitanks – a transformative solution that not only prioritizes environmental responsibility and cost-effectiveness but also ensures the essence and flavor of the wine, is reshaping the landscape of the global wine trade.
